This is my African drum. It was made in the mid twentieth century and formed in Liberia in west Africa. My drum has wood, skin, hide, and iron cloth on it. This piece of art was made for celebration of a successful hunt because it has animal hide on it and straw. It's body and drum head are similar to many African drums, but the narrow, ringed midsection and stool-like base are unusual, and I think that that's very cool because I'm similar to many humans but still unusual.

This is my final instrument. I created a cultural meaning in the decorative elements I chose because I have 21st century pop culture designs on it. Some designs I have are popular music artist, like Bruno Mars, and Never Shout Never. I incorporated symbols, like a smiley face, and money sign because money makes people happy. This is how I created a cultural meaning.

This is my instrument before all the decorations got put on it. It is a bucket drum, and I made it out of simple things like, paper, tape, and a bucket (clearly). You play it by hitting the top, and or sides of it. Some challenges I faced while creating this work of art were finding pictures that went along with my culture, although there weren't many problems building the instrument, there were problems making our costumes.

My Cultural Vibrations report will provide information that I have discovered about my musical instrument. This report will include information about the design, the comparison to the older instrument and traditions important to my creation .          Picture this: a plain boring bucket, turned into a colorful cultural artifact that is equally functioning musical instrument. For one example, when you hit my instrument hard it gets a louder pitch, when you hit it softly, it gets quieter. It is also an instrument because in order for something to be a musical instrument it has to either have, strings to pluck or use a bow on it blow into it, or hit it to get sounds. On my bucket drum you have to hit it. The last thing that makes it a musical instrument is that it is played to make beats, and rhythms. If it weren’t an instrument it would not be able to do so. This is how my bucket drum is a musical instrument.

An extraordinary thing about an old African instrument is that you can compare and contrast it to a homemade bucket drum. Some similar things about these wonderful pieces of art are that they are both able to be played by anyone. To play them you just have to hit the head of the drum, if you hit the sides, it will make a different sound. They also both function as a musical instrument and a cultural artifact. My instrument is an artifact because it has 21st century elements on it, like top music artist, innovations like the Ipad, silly bands and the IPod. Some different things is that the African instrument is smaller and more professional-looking and my drum is larger and more home-made looking. Another difference is that my instrument has pictures taped to it and the African one has things carved on it. One last difference is that my instrument is very colorful, and the African instrument is mostly brown. This is they are both the same and different in some ways.

My bucket drum can be used as part of my culture experience because I learned a lot about my 21st century culture. Something’s I learned are there isn’t just one thing to talk about in the 21st century. There are lots things like traditions. Some traditions my group has are our costumes, our costumes because we always wear black and purple when we perform. We also wear unicorn horns. In our group we also walk back a few steps, jump, and yell POKEMONS! This is how my bucket drum can be used as part of my cultural experience.

I hope you have discovered interesting information about my musical instrument such as the design, the comparison to the older instrument and traditions important to my creation.
